Classic American Quilts & Treasure & Terror Designer: Lanning Roper Description of Garden: The Museum grounds comprise of 120 acres of which 40 are open to the public. The house is surrounded to the East and South by a large lawn. On the south side of the house there is a curtain wall fronted by a herbaceous border. Further to the south there is a replica of one part of the upper garden at Mount Vernon, George Washington's house on the Potomac river, showing how it would have looked in the late 19th century. There is a unique Lewis & Clark collection celebrating the botanical discoveries of the first expedition across the west. There are also a small colonial vegetable and dye plant border, colonial herb garden and 18 acres of historical park land. There is an arboretum of North American trees and shrubs, including a Californian Redwood tree. History: Claverton Manor was built in 1820 on a greenfield site. In the early twentieth century, there was a large flower garden and conservatory on the site of the present day Mount Vernon garden. However apart from a number of specimen trees the present garden contains very little that pre-dates the arrival of the Museum in 1960.
